How We Can Help

Getting You Started

Not sure how to get started in your search for legal information? Our friendly staff can help suggest resources, decipher citations, search our databases, and more. We do not charge for research assistance that takes under 20 minutes.

We offer research assistance by phone and email as well as in person. If you are stuck on a difficult question, or just can't find what you're searching for, our staff is happy to help.

Research Assistance

We also offer more extensive research assistance for a fee. These services include:

  • noting up case law and legislation
  • running database searches, or
  • finding cases on a specific topic.

Please note, we are unable to provide legal advice or interpret legal materials.

For branch hours and contact information, see your local branch.

Document Delivery

You can request copies of cases, legislation, and other library materials by using our online form, or by calling your local branch. Once staff have located the requested materials, copies are delivered by email, mail or fax. You can also send a courier to the library or pick up the materials yourself.

Please see our fees page for delivery times and charges.

For hours, see your local branch.

Self-serve copying is also available in the following branches: Vancouver, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, New Westminster, Prince George, Victoria and Chilliwack. Self-serve copying and printing costs $0.25/page.

Please note: Due to copyright restrictions, we are only able to copy a certain portion of books and some other materials; requests that will violate the restrictions will, unfortunately, have to be refused.

Freelance Research Lawyers

The Legal Research section of the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch) maintains a list of freelance research lawyers who can assist with extensive legal research projects. Please note that the researchers on this list are not affiliated with the Courthouse Library or the Canadian Bar Association.

Training and Tutorials

Learn the basics of legal research on your own with our short video tutorials.

You can also sign up for our free LawSource and CriminalSource training, available via webinar or in-person at the Vancouver Courthouse Library.

Fees

See our fees page for copying and research charges.
