  • Wisdom Gratis: Legal course materials now free

    by CLBC Administrator | Jul 16, 2013

Just In: Another great resource is now free!

We here at Courthouse Libraries BC are always excited when legal information becomes freely available. It is in this vein, that we are heartily applauding a recent development in Ontario.   The Law Society of Upper Canada and their Great Library have worked together to make course materials from their CLE/CPD sessions available online.  Now if the material is older than 18 months, it is completely free to download and print.

Access CLE  launched in 2007 but was always a strictly pay-per-view structure. Now for the first time, you can access any of the older material for free.  You can; of course, continue to pay for the most current material if you should need it right away.  There are currently over 6,000 articles dating back to 2004 available to search.  This is a laudable service to the profession and frankly to legal communities across Canada.

So what does this mean for a BC lawyer? This is great news for lawyers who:

    -          are practicing in any area of the law with a national focus;

    -          are wanting to compare an issue from their practice area with what is happening in Ontario; or

    -          are interested in practice management CLE material.

What might this look like? Let’s say that you are an immigration lawyer who has heard great things about the yearly Immigration Summit, taking place in November every year. You can review the list of papers from the two day conference and read up on any of the very timely topics in your area of law, with practical advice from our Ontario colleagues.

You could also search for specific topics.  Below you will see an example of a search for “search warrants”.

This search turns up a number of great articles like:

Selecting this 2011 article, “The Other Half of the Battle: Unconstitutional Searches and the Exclusion of Evidence” downloads the entire PDF to be saved or printed.  Fantastic!

Special thanks to Shaunna Mireau at Slaw for alerting us to this great resource with her SlawTips.

  • Retrofit your Legal Info Toolkit with CBA and Courthouse Libraries BC

    by CLBC Administrator | Mar 07, 2011

On March 16, 2011, we host the Canadian Bar Association's General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section’s lunch meeting where we will present “Top Ten Tips and Tricks for Finding Legal Information”. We will discuss ways lawyers can get useful legal information where at least two of the following apply:
    • For free
    • Where the hard work is already done
    • Without leaving your desk.
For many, especially those lawyers who expect to recover disbursements at the end of the day, a chat about “free” versus “for fee” is a timely one. While free resources like CanLII or the Courts’ websites have taken off, as for that matter have digital offerings through Courthouse Libraries BC, lawyers need to ask whether expensive research tools, and their costs, are always justifiable. Computer-assisted research fees have been a point of contention for some time in assessment of costs hearings, and even more so now as free services improve. The question of whether fee-based services are proper and necessary cannot be safely ignored from a business and client-relations perspective.
If you’re interested, check out the details here, and if you want to attend, even if you are not a CBA member, you can apply to obtain a privilege pass.
The tools we will feature include products and services offered by or through the Library, as well as online tools, some of which you will know of, and others perhaps not.

  • Professional Development Courses for October 2010

    by CLBC Administrator | Sep 30, 2010

With the launch of the Courthouse Libraries BC's Legal Research Essentials: Finding Cases on Point course (good for 1 hour of CPD credit), we have decided to put out a monthly Stream post listing other sources for professional development.

To begin with, we'll list those professional development opportunities made available by the Canadian Bar Association - BC Branch, the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia, the Law Courts Centre and the Trial Lawyer's Association of British Columbia.

And of course we will mention anything the Courthouse Library puts on. For instance, on Tuesday, October 26, the Vancouver Courthouse Library is offering a one hour LawSource (Westlaw Canada) training session, good for 1 hour of Law Society CPD credit. There are also times available in November and December, and we are hoping to offer a similar session in Victoria soon, so stay tuned.

The problem is, we don't like long lists. We are hoping to expand this service to include more providers of CPD and to develop this in to a full-featured CPD calendar. What do you think? Would you find this useful? We would also love to know how you keep informed of CPD opportunities that are of interest to you and what features you think would be useful in a CPD event calendar.

With that said, the following professional development courses are being offered this October. Courses are listed in date order under the organization that is providing the course. For more information about a specific course, click on the name of the organization.
