Criminal Appeal Basics: Deciding to Appeal & Basic Steps in an Appeal

This is the first of a series of training sessions on appellate practice in criminal law to be offered by Legal Aid BC, the BC Court of Appeal and Courthouse Libraries BC. This is an introductory level course on appellate practice for criminal law practitioners. This training session will be provided by Madam Justice DeWitt-Van Oosten, Marilyn Sandford, QC, and Garth Barriere.

In this session, the presenters will cover the factors to consider when filing an appeal, common grounds of appeal, drafting commencing documents, the main steps in an appeal, the applicability of the practice directive on conviction/acquittal appeal timelines, and case management.

Participants in this webinar may claim up to 2 hours of CPD with LSBC.

Legal Research with Courthouse Libraries BC Remote Access Databases

This 1-hour webinar presented by Courthouse Libraries BC will show you some of the legal research databases you can access remotely. We’ll cover our popular website databases put together by our Law Librarians to assist you in your research as well as our Remote Access Subscription Databases. This will include e-texts available from Irwin Law, primary sources in Hein Online, sentencing ranges in RangeFindr and news sources in Canadian Newsstream. This training session is intended for members of the Law Society of BC, who can access these remote databases through their Courthouse Library library account. Participants in this training session can claim up to 1 hour of CPD credit with LSBC.
