Where can I find pre-1958 BC regulations?
Last revised September 08, 2022

In 1958, the Regulations Act, S.B.C. 1958, c. 49, established the process for making regulations.  Before 1958, regulatory orders were made but there were no "regulations" as such.

To locate orders:

Check the 1958 volume of the BC Gazette, Part II. Some old orders were made into regulations in 1958 and were published in the first volume of the Gazette (available at Courthouse Libraries BC).

Check the enabling act that was in force at the time.  What was authorized by the act?

  • If it was an Order-in-Council, contact the Order-in-Council office.
  • If it was another type of administrative order, check with the appropriate Ministry.
  • If the act required that the order be published, check the BC Gazette (available at Courthouse Libraries BC)

Municipal records are another possible source.
