Last revised April 24, 2025

Corporal punishment was outlawed in BC schools in 1973. This was first announced on February 14, 1973, in the Legislative Assembly by then-Minister of Education, Eileen Dailly.

Order in Council 598-1973 was approved and ordered on February 16, 1973, and amended BC Reg 83/72 by striking out section 14 and substituting the following:

14(1) The discipline in every school shall be similar to that of a kind, firm and judicious parent but shall not include corporal punishment.

(2) No teacher shall administer corporal punishment to any pupil.

Order in Council 598-1973 was deposited in BC Reg 224/75, filed March 10, 1975.
