Generative AI is a tool that can help, but it can also make mistakes. Use it carefully - especially for legal issues.
AI may be able to help:
- Fix grammar and improve your writing
- Write drafts of letters or other court documents
- Explain legal terms using plain language
- Organize your thoughts before talking to a lawyer
Follow these guidelines to use AI safely:
- Ask AI for sources and check them yourself
- Review and verify any information that AI gives you
- Don’t input confidential or personal information into AI
- Check that websites or forms are from a trusted source and a relevant jurisdiction
Remember:
- AI is not a lawyer
- AI may give you a wrong answer that is convincing
- AI may give information that does not match your situation
- You are responsible for the accuracy of your documents
- You can talk to a lawyer for legal advice or ask us to provide an informed referral
If you have questions about your search, need help verifying information or determining what makes a trusted source, please contact an experienced law librarian.
