2023 Retention and Weeding List & Guidelines

The 2023 update of the Retention and Weeding List is now available. This list includes all titles that have been recommended on the Law Books for Libraries lists from 2008 to 2022 and gives guidance around whether a title should be retained or weeded. The list also provides guidance around those titles that may be dated but are not factually incorrect.

We have also updated LawMatters' Retention and Weeding Guidelines. These guidelines are meant to support you when considering whether to retain or weed legal titles that did not originate from the Law Books for Libraries List. They provide an overview of the different important factors to consider when it comes to weeding legal material and include a brief breakdown of the types of subjects you can expect to find within particular legal topics.

Both of these documents, as well as our other collection documents such as the Law Books for Libraries List, can be found on our Grants & collection development page.

LawMatters is also happy to help with weeding on a case-by-case basis! If you have questions about a particular title, or list of titles, in your collection, please feel free to send it to us at lawmatters@courthouselibrary.ca. We will get back to you with weeding advice specific to those titles.
